We have been interested by the technique of Das Reifendrehen, or ring-turning, for a long time. It is a method of mass production, in that each turned ring will render up to 60 identical silhouettes. The forms are usually animals, which are then finished as desired. So far as we can tell, there are eight or nine practitioners of Das Reifendrehen, and most (all?) of them are in the Ore Mountains--which the Germans call the Erzgebirge, and the Czechs, Krušné hory. Toy-making is concentrated in the German town of Seiffen.
