TURNED OBJECTS & ORNAMENTS à la ERZGEBIRGE & SACHSEN

Antique turned toys and ornaments have caught out attention! We first stumbled upon this vein of turning as we began researching Das Reifendrehen, or ring-turning. This technique of mass-producing wooden silhouette forms is still the centrepiece of our research & work.

As usual, however, related topics have become important & intriguing as well.

For example, what or where do the little figures do or go once one is finished making them? The usual solution in the Erzgebirge region of Germany, the premiere toy-making area of that country, is to place the animals in Noah's Arks, Pyramidenleuchter, and Nativity Crèches. For seasonal decorations, putz scenes are often arranged. There are also numerous farm, zoo, and woodland scenes that are usually more freehand, as well as functioning as imagination-infused toys for childrens.

Moreover, the other wood products of the region--such as the famous Erzgebirge nutcrackers--are also interesting. So we are researching various production contexts and methods very vigorously at this time.
